Kansas City man sentenced in fatal shooting of ex-girlfriend on her birthday

A Jackson County judge on Wednesday sentenced a 26-year-old Kansas City man to life in prison without parole in the fatal shooting of his former girlfriend on her 21st birthday, prosecutors announced.

Jackson County Circuit Judge Adam Caine ordered Rasheed M. Turner to serve an additional 15 years on the charge of armed criminal action in the May 13, 2025, killing of Layla A. Freeman of Kansas City. Caine ordered the two sentences to be served consecutively.
