KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former Evergy employees took to the picket line Wednesday morning in downtown Kansas City after recent layoffs.
On Jan. 5, the utility company laid off over a dozen employees in its metering operations team. Evergy said the layoffs were necessary to align staffing to business needs.

Picketers, however, said they don’t buy it.
“Our work is there, and we were told that we don’t have work,” picketer Jay Hiltgen said. “It’s there, and it’s showed up since we’ve been laid off. The work crews outside our group (are) bogged down with our work and trying to do their own work.”
Laid-off workers also picketed outside Evergy offices in Topeka earlier this month.
In a statement to sister station KSNT, Evergy said the company has been using digital meters that can be operated remotely, which the company says reduced the workload for employees.
