Kansas police officer shot while helping apprehend homicide suspect

FRANKLIN COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday evening in Ottawa, according to a media release from the agency.

​At approximately 5:30 p.m., law enforcement officers from the Ottawa Police Department Special Tactics and Rescue Team, a combined unit of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Ottawa Police Department, attempted to serve a warrant on a homicide suspect out of Kansas City, Missouri. The warrant was being served at a multi-unit residence in the 500 block of South Locust Street in Ottawa.

​During the initial approach, the suspect fired from within the residence, striking an Ottawa police officer. The officer sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported by ambulance to a Kansas City area hospital, where he is being treated and is expected to recover…
