As FIFA World Cup kicks off, union leaders say Houston stadium workers don’t make enough

As the FIFA World Cup kicks off in Houston, labor organizers are highlighting the less-glamorous side of the major tourist event: stadium workers who they say aren’t paid enough.

About a dozen stadium workers and Unite Here Local 23 organizers held a news conference outside Harris County Commissioners Court on Thursday in an effort to gain political support for the workers.

“Over the last few years, we’ve seen our city transform into a world-class tourist destination, with more and more major events coming to our city,” Franchesca Caraballo, Texas chapter president of Unite Here Local 23, said outside Commissioners Court. “And yet the workers across the city that make these events possible are barely making it.”…
