The sounds of prayer, conversation and celebration surrounded the Hindu Society of Central Florida last month for Ganesh Utsav, a festival devoted to a deity widely revered as a remover of obstacles and a symbol of new beginnings for millions of Hindus.
Ganesh Utsav, also known as Ganesh Chaturthi, commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity with the head of an elephant but the body of a man. The festival is traditionally marked by prayers, offerings, devotional music, food and community gatherings. For a full week, from Sept. 14-20, Ganesh Utsav was celebrated at the Hindu Society of Central Florida by the Orlando Marathi Mandal.
In Maharashtra — the second-most populated state in India and home to Mumbai, once known as Bombay — public ceremonies can fill the streets, homes and neighborhood spaces, bringing people of different ages and backgrounds together over the course of several days. The festival is open to all, free — including prasad (offered food) — and has events happening from morning times to evening throughout the week.
For members of the Orlando Marathi community, Ganesh Utsav is more than a religious observation. It is a meeting point for memories and migration, a chance for families with roots in Maharashtra and elsewhere in India to sustain traditions while building livelihoods away from relatives, land and rituals from home…
