ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) — The city of Alcoa is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Freedom Fest, an Independence Day event that has grown from a small fireworks display into one of the area’s largest celebrations.
The event started in 1974 when two Alcoa residents wanted to show foreign exchange students how the city celebrates freedom, according to Emily Crateau, public information officer for the city of Alcoa. They lit about $100 worth of fireworks on Independence Day. In 1976, the event became known as Freedom Fest.
