KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Tennessee plans to crack down on speeding statewide this week during the annual “Operation Southern Slow Down.”
Between Monday and Saturday, multiple states plan to increase speed enforcement on major highways and high-risk areas in an effort to reduce fatal crashes. The annual operation usually happens in the summer months when there is increased travel.

During a press event on Monday, Captain Eric Miller of the Tennessee Highway Patrol explained that speed limits aren’t arbitrary. They’re in place for good reasons such as aspects of the roadway or curvature.
“If you just increase your speed three to five mph, it’s going to reduce your reaction time,” Miller said. “It’s going to reduce your stop time and your overall capability of processing things.”…
