KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Crews are hard at work demolishing homes ahead of phases five and six of the Transforming Western Initiative. Check out photos and videos of the old buildings coming down.

This project is meant to bring affordable housing to a city where rent and house prices have skyrocketed in recent years.

‘Built for our neighbors’: New solar farm goes live in Maryville, feeding power into local grid

Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation is scheduled to soon break ground on Phase 4 of the initiative. Phase one was finished in January, bringing 76 new homes to the market. KCDC originally broke ground on the project in 2023.

The entire project is planned to eventually create 479 housing units. Phases five and six are scheduled to be completed in August 2029 and December 2029.
