News 15 Investigates learns man described as ‘escaped inmate’ wasn’t actual inmate

News 15 Investigates is looking into questions about what authorities in Opelousas described as a case of an “escaped inmate” considered “dangerous” to the community. However, the escapee wasn’t actually an inmate at the St. Landry Parish Jail. Law enforcement is searching for Michael Vavasseur, 34, of Opelousas. Despite calling him an inmate in initial alerts to the public, authorities have confirmed that’s not exactly the case. Authorities have also described him as “dangerous” but still haven’t said what charges he was facing. News 15 Investigates did some digging and found out he is a convicted felon in Lafayette and has a recent arrest for domestic abuse. He’s also previously faced burglary, drug, and weapon charges. Video shows Vavasseur as he was last seen in Opelousas wearing a gray T-shirt and gray shorts, with handcuffs still dangling from one wrist and shackles around his ankles. Authorities reported Vavasseur underwent mental health treatment at the order of a judge, possibly on condition of bond.
