Deputies continue search for possible drowning victim

The Allen Parish Sheriff’s Office is continuing its search Monday for a 25-year-old Port Barre man believed to have drowned Saturday in the Calcasieu River west of Oberlin.

According to Sheriff Doug Hebert III, the incident happened around 3:30 p.m. when the man attempted to swim across the river to reach friends on the opposite bank.

“Apparently there were some friends across the river and he tried to swim across with some floaties on, but he was taken downstream,” Hebert said. “Two of his friends jumped in and tried to save him, but they couldn’t handle the water either and had a hard time getting out themselves. That was the last time they saw him.”…
