How farmers market produce makes it to your table

CINCINNATI — Going to the farmers market is often a weekly activity for many families. For some – it’s about supporting local businesses. For others – it’s getting a chance to buy produce and meat that might be a little healthier or fresher than what you find at a grocery. But how do you really know if that’s the case?

The ringing of the bells is the sound that signifies the opening of the Hyde Park Farmer’s Market every Sunday. And at the Elmwood Stock Farm booth, it’s been a tradition decades in the making.

Mac Stone has been a part of the farm for 30 years and has helped them transition to being certified organic.

Elmwood Stock Farm is about 75 miles south of Cincinnati in Georgetown, Kentucky, which is where Stone shows how that bag of lettuce makes it to the farmers market each week.

“Maybe my lettuce is going to cost a few dollars more but I can relax and enjoy the food and not think about what happened to it before it got to me,” Stone said…
