Mark Pope, Kentucky set the stage for a 5-star recruiting battle with Louisville

It took Mark Pope a while to get a hold on high school recruiting as the head coach at Kentucky, but by George, does he seem to have a grasp now. Pope and his staff hit the gas on the No. 1 player in the 2027 recruiting class, Marcus Spears Jr., essentially right after landing his first five-star freshman in Ryan Hampton. He’s showing no signs of slowing down, either.

Per Sam Kayser on X, five-star center (also in the 2027-28 bunch) Darius Wabbington, out of Sunnyslope in Phoenix, has shaved his list of potential colleges down to six. In line with the blue and white’s recent recruiting momentum, Kentucky finds themselves among this bunch. That’s a good news.

The bad news, unfortunately, is a little heavier. Not only do the Wildcats not yet have an official visit scheduled with Wabbington (a prime window for a commitment), but Louisville has the first visit. Before Wabbington touches down in Arizona or Texas, he’ll be in cahoots with Pat Kelsey on September 11…
