Texas A&M’s matchup against Kentucky this weekend has one interesting twist that has been under-discussed thus far in the lead up to the game— that, of course, being the fact that one of Mike Elko’s key staffers from his first two years will be on the opposite sideline in this game.
Elko has already addressed the question that immediately comes to mind in that situation, saying that he is more than just a little bit vigilant about changing up terminology so as to prevent coaches who have formerly worked with him from using it against his teams. However, it’s more than just Elko’s vigilance that should keep Aggie fans feeling confident in the face of a potential inside track from Kentucky’s DC.
When Elko returned to College Station as head coach, his choice of defensive coordinator was Jay Bateman, formerly a DC at North Carolina and head coach at Army. Bateman’s scheme was not all that far off from Elko’s, so the meshing of philosophies was something that made a lot of sense for Aggie fans.

However, Bateman was not exactly what Aggie fans had hoped at the DC position— though Elko was ensuring it was his defensive philosophy that was being run in College Station, Bateman was responsible in large part for teaching it and calling the plays.
