OMAHA, NEBRASKA — A Level 2 out of 5 Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms has been issued for Friday, August 21, according to the latest outlook from Max Velocity Weather, covering Nebraska and northern Kansas, with very large hail and damaging winds identified as the primary threats.
Scattered Storms Expected Friday Afternoon and Evening
Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across Nebraska and northern Kansas during Friday afternoon and evening, with the Slight Risk zone centered directly over Omaha and Lincoln.
The outlook’s highest-risk yellow shading covers a corridor stretching from near the Nebraska Panhandle through Omaha and Lincoln, continuing toward the Kansas City area.
Significant Hail Threat
Storms within the Slight Risk zone could produce significant hail larger than two inches in diameter, large enough to cause serious damage to vehicles, roofing, and property across the highlighted corridor.
Destructive Wind Gusts Possible
In addition to the hail threat, forecasters are also warning of destructive wind gusts in excess of 75 mph with the strongest storms, a speed capable of producing damage comparable to a weak tornado.

This Slight Risk designation follows an earlier NAM3K model signal that flagged an updraft helicity corridor through much of this same eastern Nebraska region for the Friday evening timeframe, now confirmed with an official severe weather outlook.

Surrounding the Slight Risk zone, a much larger Marginal Risk area extends from South Dakota through Iowa and into parts of Kansas, covering Sioux Falls, Rapid City, Des Moines, and Wichita, where isolated severe storms are also possible but at a lower probability than in the core Nebraska corridor.
