Arkansas pursues waivers to cut back federal oversight of public education

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Arkansas is asking the U.S. Department of Education to waive certain federal requirements for the state’s public education system, joining other states that are pursuing independence from federal education strictures under an administration that encourages it.

At a meeting last Thursday, the Arkansas Department of Education announced its intent to request waivers from parts of federal laws governing K-12 education.

In addition to the waivers, the state is requesting a revision to its ESSA plan, the federal education strategy it complies with, to better reflect the state’s needs…
