Dashcam footage from a Tesla appears to show a runaway tire flying over the center divider of the 405 Freeway and into oncoming traffic moments before a fatal motorcycle crash Wednesday in the San Fernando Valley.
The incident occurred just before 11:20 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway near Burbank Boulevard, north of the 101 Freeway.
In the dashcam video, what appears to be a stray tire can be seen bouncing over the center divider and into the far-left southbound lane. The tire then moves out of the camera’s frame. Seconds later, a motorcyclist is seen falling from the motorcycle and sliding into traffic, where he is run over by a driver in a white Toyota SUV.
Responding Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics declared the motorcyclist dead at the scene, according to California Highway Patrol officials, who said that the exact cause of the crash is under investigation.
