Inmate who escaped remote L.A. County conservation camp apprehended

A 41-year-old inmate who walked away from a Los Angeles County conservation camp earlier this week has been apprehended, officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced.

Francisco Cervantes was discovered missing around 8 a.m. from Fenner Canyon Conservation Camp in Valyermo.

He was described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 194 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing an orange shirt, orange pants and black boots, though officials said he may have also been wearing gray clothing and white tennis shoes.

According to CDCR, Cervantes was transferred to the Valyermo facility from San Bernardino County on May 21, 2024. He is serving a five-year, eight-month sentence for assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.

Special agents with CDCR’s Office of Correctional Safety apprehended Cervantes just after 7 p.m. on May 12 in Fontana, a city in San Bernardino County, officials said in a news release.

Investigators did not provide details on how Cervantes managed to walk away from the remote camp and travel nearly 60 miles before his capture. Officials also did not say whether the 41-year-old received any help during the three-day escape attempt…
