A legal and public dispute involving the longtime South Los Angeles restaurant Chef Marilyn’s has ignited debate throughout the community over business ownership, trust and the challenges facing legacy Black-owned businesses.
The conflict centers on a February 2026 “Deal Memo” signed by restaurateur Marilyn Ann Cole, known publicly as Chef Marilyn, and attorneys Cierra Carter and Channing Smith. Cole alleges she was misled into surrendering control of her business, while Carter and Smith say the agreement was an effort to rescue a financially distressed restaurant from closure.
