Mother Says Anxiety Eased After Leaving Los Angeles for Arizona Desert Ranch Life With Three Homeschooled Boys, Chickens and Goats in Snowflake

SNOWFLAKE, AZ — After years in Los Angeles, Jen Podany says daily life had become so overwhelming that even a solo trip to the grocery store felt impossible. Her family eventually left the city for a ranch in Arizona, where she says the slower pace has made a dramatic difference in her mental health.

Podany, 41, grew up in Omaha and moved to Los Angeles at 18 to work in dermatology and skincare. What began as a career built around networking, nightlife and constant motion eventually gave way to anxiety severe enough that she says ordinary errands felt daunting.

From Los Angeles ambition to mounting anxiety

Podany said she once embraced the energy of Los Angeles, where she built a skincare career and later launched Bluestone Sunshields, a sun-protection brand making UPF 50+ accessories. For years, she valued the city’s opportunities and the sense that there was always something happening.

But while raising her three sons in the city, she says her experience changed. During the pandemic years, with fires, stress and constant unease around her, the anxiety she had never felt before began to build. Over time, she says it affected even the smallest parts of daily life.
