Louisville plans its Juneteenth celebrations

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Louisville leaders recognized community members ahead of Juneteenth, the nation’s newest federal holiday marking the day Union Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to inform enslaved people they were free.

Mayor Craig Greenberg honored the Annual Juneteenth Jubilee Commission Award winners, noting the importance of celebrating local accomplishments while acknowledging more work remains.
