LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has sent a letter to the Federal Highway Administration asking officials not to approve a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet proposal to repair the Second Street Bridge and to withhold funding for the project.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s plan calls for the removal of the existing sidewalk and the installation of a safety barrier wall. To accommodate those changes, the bridge would go from four travel lanes — two in each direction — to three lanes, with two lanes heading northbound and one lane heading southbound into Louisville.
Drivers divided on the proposal
Some drivers who regularly use the bridge, like Tonya VanKleef, said the changes are needed.
“Definitely needs to be wider,” she said. “And there’s been a lot of wrecks and hold-ups and, you know, it’s just, I feel like it’s just not safe anymore.”…
