“The Negro race, like all races, is going to be saved by its exceptional men.” — W.E.B. DuBois, “The Talented Tenth, ” — 1903.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear recently delivered a stirring eulogy as he reflected on the life and legacy of his right-hand man, J. Michael Brown . Beshear was filled with love, admiration, honesty and emotion as he summarized Brown’s life and contributions to his adopted state. Brother J. Michael, who was one of my Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity brothers, deserved every word of praise and more.
John Michael Brown held many roles in his life – husband, father, grandfather, Army officer, lawyer extraordinaire, judge and skilled political operative among others. He was a powerful, titan of a man and a shining example of Dubois’ college educated “Talented Tenth” leadership. Indeed, Brown, a graduate of City College of New York and the University of Louisville’s Brandeis School of Law, stood tall among “exceptional men,” making members of every race who came in contact with him better.
