King Elementary closes after 57 years amid JCPS budget cuts, impacting West Louisville community

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The final dismissal bell rang at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in the Shawnee neighborhood. The final classes of the school’s grades leave the building Friday, headed to start their summer vacation and to start their education at a new school, next school year.

The closing and selling of King Elementary is just one of the many decisions made during Dr. Brian Yearwood’s first year as Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) superintendent.

The school has been serving students of West Louisville for 57 years…
