MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Madison leaders are considering a proposal that would transfer control of Park Street and several connected roadways from the state to the city, a move supporters say could help speed up safety improvements along one of the city’s busiest corridors.
The proposal would transfer portions of Park Street, along with sections of John Nolen Drive, Blair Street, West Washington Avenue and Proudfit-North Shore, from the state’s highway system to city control. Under the proposal, those roadways would no longer be designated as part of U.S. Highway 151, according to city documents.
District 14 Alder Noah Lieberman said the proposal is about giving Madison more control over decisions affecting the corridor.
“The challenges of Park Street are not something we just learned about,” Lieberman said. “They are things that the city has been working on for decades, but have just become harder and harder because of the extra hurdles we have to go through in order to get things done, so what this proposal would do first and foremost is just put control of that into our hands and let us take the actions that we as the people who live along Park Street know needs to be taken.”…
