Madison man gets nearly 6 years for possessing guns and ammunition as felon

MADISON, Wis. — A 39-year-old Madison man was sentenced Wednesday to nearly six years in federal prison for possessing firearms and ammunition as a convicted felon.

Marvin Coates was sentenced to 71 months after he pleaded guilty to this charge on March 18. The man was also sentenced to an additional 24 months in federal prison for violating the terms of his supervised release.

The case stems from an Aug. 28, 2025, incident in which Madison police responded to a 911 call alleging Coates had threatened a person and followed that person home…
