Madison mayor tells agencies to make cuts for 2027 budget

MADISON, Wis. — Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway told city agency heads Tuesday to cut their budgets by 2% for the upcoming year.

The mayor also directed department heads to identify “lower priority services” to cut. The directives are part of Rhodes-Conway’s broader guidelines that she wants the city to follow as she shapes the 2027 operating budget.

In her message to agencies, the mayor said that the city was facing several monetary challenges including inflation and rising fuel costs as well as restrictions put in place by the Expenditure Restraint Incentive Program.
