Fighting food insecurity in Oregon

One Oregon High School senior is leading an effort to address food insecurity in his community, establishing a club that takes a multi-pronged approach to the issue. Matthew Schultz, who has grown up in Oregon, created the high school’s chapter of Meals Matter this year.

Meals Matter, a national organization dedicated to fighting food insecurity, empowers high school students to become involved with this cause by focusing on the need in their communities. Oregon Meals Matter is the most recent chapter created in the area, with other chapters in Middleton, Madison, Sun Prairie, Waunakee and New Glarus.

It was through this network of other chapters that Schultz learned about Meals Matter. He says that after speaking with students from the Middleton chapter, he became interested in starting a chapter of his own in Oregon. A conversation a few months later with a DeForest social worker about homelessness in high school further motivated Schultz…
