NWS Memphis adds probabilistic HeatRisk forecasts for summer

The U.S. National Weather Service in Memphis said it has added probabilistic HeatRisk forecasts for the summer to give users more context about heat threats.

The new product provides likelihoods for five HeatRisk categories — “Little/None,” “Minor,” “Moderate,” “Major” and “Extreme” — the agency said.

The service said the probabilistic forecasts can help event planners and the public gauge the chance a forecasted category will rise. For example, the agency said a forecast showing “Moderate” could still have a measurable probability of upgrading to “Major.”…
