MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Jury selection began Monday in the trial of two former Shelby County jailers charged in connection with the 2022 death of an inmate at 201 Poplar. The process is expected to continue Tuesday and could stretch into Wednesday.
Stevon Jones and Courtney Parham each face a second-degree murder charge in the death of Gershun Freeman. Both were present in the courtroom Monday with their attorneys.
Much of the day was spent with potential jurors explaining to the judge why they could not serve on the trial. The primary obstacle was the jury’s required sequestration — meaning jurors will be away from their homes and without their phones for the duration of the trial.
