‘Unqualified executioners:’ Organizations call on TN Governor to launch another investigation into TDOC’s execution practices

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WMC) -The Federal Public Defender for the Middle District of Tennessee is asking Governor Bill Lee to launch yet another investigation into the Tennessee Department of Correction’s execution practices.

This comes after Memphis murderer Tony Carruthers was set to be executed Thursday morning at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution, and it was cancelled due to a failed lethal injection attempt.

“The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) tortured Mr. Carruthers for over an hour and a half, as unqualified executioners attempted to establish an IV line,” said Amy Harwell, the First Assistant to the Federal Public Defender for the Middle District of Tennessee…
