At a time when loneliness and isolation are being recognized as a public health problem, Miami is taking a literal seat at the table to change that. Making its public debut in the city, The Longest Table is a free community potluck bringing strangers and neighbors together while leaving you with hundreds of delectable options to choose from!
Think of a sprawling dinner table filled with pastelitos, family recipes and store-bought favorites as far as the eye can see. And after you grab a plate, you’ll sit down side-by-side with strangers and spark meaningful conversations (we all could use a little more connection, after all).
Research shows that over 8 in 10 participants at these events meet someone new and report a greater sense of belonging. And the timing being perfect aligned with Mental Health Awareness Month is no coincidence. The evening kicks off the 10th annual 10 Days of Connection, which has engaged more than 317,000 residents across different cultures, backgrounds and perspectives.
How to participate
Originally launched as a grassroots gathering in NYC’s Chelsea neighborhood, The Longest Table has grown into a national movement. The premise for Miami’s dinner is quite simple:
- Bring a dish (or more): Whether it’s a treasured family recipe or a box of pastries picked up from your favorite local bakery, every contribution is welcome.
- Pull up a chair: Attendees are encouraged to sit beside people they do not yet know.
- Get a conversation going: The shared meal serves as a natural icebreaker!
While this massive community feast is free to attend, you’ll want to secure your spot by registering beforehand. You can RSVP at bit.ly/thelongesttableinmiami, but keep in mind that registrations close on Tuesday, April 28.
The Longest Table runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at The Underline’s Inter Grove Gallery (2771 SW 27th Avenue, Miami) on Friday, May 1. The event is timed perfectly with Mental Health Awareness Month, and former U.S. Surgeon General and Miami Palmetto Senior High grad Dr. Vivek Murthy will be the guest of honor…
