Mobile, AL — A new City of Mobile ordinance aimed at reducing blight and improving safety in downtown Mobile officially takes effect Monday.
The Vacant Structure Registry applies to buildings within the Henry Aaron Loop that have been vacant for more than six months. While the ordinance is now in effect, city officials say enforcement is still months away because staff must first identify which buildings qualify.
In simple terms, the ordinance creates a list of vacant downtown buildings and requires owners to register those properties with the city. Owners will also have to meet maintenance and safety requirements intended to keep vacant buildings from falling into disrepair…
