MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — An illegal and highly addictive drug in Alabama can be found at gas stations and vape shops marketed as “energy shots.”

It’s called Kratom, and these bottles claim to help with stress and give you that extra boost.
Virginia Guy with the Drug Education Council says these bottles can be found all over Mobile and Baldwin counties.
“In high doses, it has almost an opioid like effect. So, you know, it can it rides on the pain receptors in the brain the same way opioids do. It’s not an opioid,” said Drug Education Council Executive Director Virginia Guy.
Kratom originally comes from a plant, but manufacturers are now creating a synthetic version that is a lot stronger.
Guy said the drug is highly addictive, and these bottles do not paint that picture…
