MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis said Monday he wants to put police officers in city schools, a move he envisions supplementing – not replacing – the services that Mobile County sheriff’s deputies already provide.
Cheriogotis said he has had positive discussions with Mobile County Public School System leaders about the idea. He said financial terms still need to be hammered out.
“Our goal ultimately would be to have an officer in each and every city school,” he said. “That’s not really feasible to do all at one time. In the end, while the Sheriff’s Department is still at these schools, serving these schools, if there’s an incident that needs a police report, they’re still calling MPD. MPD is still responding. And so rather than responding as needed, we want to be inside the schools, truly protecting our children.”…
