ATLANTA — Norfolk Southern has completed a series of infrastructure projects in Alabama, begun in 2024, to upgrade its route connecting the northern and central parts of the state to the Port of Mobile.
The projects on the railroad’s 3-B Corridor include a series of siding projects, as well as improvements around the Wilton, Ala., yard. When announced in 2024, the railroad estimated the cost would be more than $200 million. [See “Norfolk Southern announces …,” Trains.com, Aug. 1, 2024]. The route includes the 3-B North and South districts, covering 319 miles between Burstall, on the outskirts of Birmingham, Ala., and Mobile.
“The investments we have made to our 3-B Corridor over the last two years are reflective of NS’ commitment to meeting demand and delivering safe, reliable and efficient service for our customers,” David Lehlbach, NS assistant vice president, strategic planning, said in a press release. “This work — the largest comprehensive corridor improvement project that NS has undertaken in a decade — strengthens a corridor that is essential to Alabama’s economy, ensuring the state’s businesses have the supply chain infrastructure they need to continue to compete and grow.”…
