MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A lawyer for a capital murder defendant renewed her request Wednesday for a court order to pay for a brain scan of her client.
Gamaliel Darren Walker, 45, of Mobile, is accused of killing Raymona Morris-Antalan during a burglary. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
The Alabama Department of Mental Health determined in July that after treatment, Walker was competent to stand trial. Defense attorney Christine Hernandez said Walker’s mental state at the time of the killing is at issue. She said she would like a psychiatrist hired by the defense to examine Walker and determine if a brain scan is necessary. That would require him to be transferred from the Taylor Hardin Secure Medical Facility in Tuscaloosa.
