Authentic Modesto banh mi restaurant opens while ‘nontraditional’ one is stalled

It’s been a year since Modesto residents first saw a sign above a Pelandale Avenue unit indicating a banh mi restaurant was coming.

Then, the restaurant was to be called Daily Bake. Around six months into the opening process, however, owner Hai Ngo changed the name to Yum Mi.

Ngo moved from Vietnam to San Jose a decade ago, then lived in Stockton before settling in Modesto. He decided to open a banh mi spot to give the city something different, he said…
