It’s been eight years since Toys R Us closed on Sisk Road in Modesto — almost a decade of residents wondering what will come next for the large, vacant space along Highway 99.
At some points, there were answers. In 2021, U-Haul purchased the building and used it as a temporary showroom with plans to renovate it as a storage and moving center, but that would have required a rezoning. The parcel was rezoned in 2023 for “mixed use,” but the ship had apparently already sailed for U-Haul.
Demolition of the structure built in 1985 has recently begun, as people driving on the highway or Sisk Road can see, leaving them wondering: Is something finally replacing Toys R Us?
What is happening on Sisk Road?
While a building permit is not publically available on the Stanislaus County web portal, nor did the city of Modesto respond to request for comment by the time of publication, a job listing on Indeed confirms that Green Acres Nursery & Supply is building at the Sisk Road parcel — and is hiring a store manager…
