In a world often dominated by bad news, busy schedules, and doom-scrolling, it’s easy to wonder if simple kindness is becoming a thing of the past. It can be tempting to get caught up in the rhetoric of news stories that tell us “if it bleeds, it leads,” but I am here to remind you otherwise. Small-town kindness still exists, and it’s the everyday moments that make West Alabama home.

Thankfully, across Alabama, there are still plenty of reminders that neighborly living is alive and well.
It happens in the grocery store when someone lets you go ahead because you only have a few items. It’s the stranger who returns your shopping cart, the driver who stops to help change a flat tire, or the neighbor who checks on you after a storm rolls through town. And, of course, living in Tuscaloosa, we saw it firsthand recently as crowds gathered in the scorching heat, posters and flags in hand to welcome the Roberts Family home upon their return from California, where their son Will passed away.
The same was true at the weekend funeral services for Will Roberts, with around 50,000 people streaming the service around the state and country. These moments rarely make the evening news, but they’re part of what gives Alabama its character…
