MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — The state of Alabama is now investigating the Southern Poverty Law Center, the attorney general’s office announced Monday.
Attorney General Steve Marshall said the investigation centers around alleged deceptive fundraising practices that would violate Alabama’s consumer protection statutes.
The news comes weeks after the Montgomery-based non-profit was indicted on federal fraud charges. Those indictments alleged the civil rights group defrauded doners through the use of an informant program.
