RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WZTV) — Rutherford County’s assessor is pushing back against a state effort to change how rental homes are taxed.
This comes after a state review found the Rutherford County property assessments system in compliance with state guidance.
Now, Rob Mitchell, Rutherford County’s assessor of property, says the Tennessee Division of Property Assessments is trying to reclassify separately assessed residential homes as commercial property, adding the law doesn’t support that approach. Mitchell adds “the division’s approach is not supported by the text of statute, the history of the constitutional amendment, or the case law interpreting both.”…
