Ex-Horry County deputy coroner denied parole in 2020 killing

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Former Horry County Deputy Coroner Chris Dontell was denied parole after a hearing last week, according to the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services.

Dontell was sentenced in July 2025 to 20 years in prison on criminal conspiracy and accessory charges after he admitted to helping Meagan Jackson, his ex-girlfriend, kill her estranged partner, Gregory Vincent Rice, in 2020. Dontell had a parole hearing on June 18, but it was denied because of the “nature and seriousness of the current offense.”

Dontell will be eligible for parole again in June 2027. He is currently housed at the Wateree River Correctional Institution, a minimum security prison in Sumter County…
