Horry County man involved in 2023 cross-burning federally indicted

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — An Horry County man who allegedly set up a burning cross in his backyard and pointed it toward his Black neighbors’ home is facing a two-count federal indictment.

Worden Evander Butler, 31, faces a maximum of 10 years in federal prison after being indicted in U.S. District Court in Florence. He is charged with using fire to commit a felony and interfering with the housing rights of his neighbors.

The indictment, which was filed in November but was sealed until its release on Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, accuses Butler of making racist Facebook posts directed at his neighbors and uploading photos of their home, vehicles and mailbox.

According to the indictment, the posts said he would give “his racist neighbors … a good scare for their health. With a cross in the lawn.”…
