BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) — The North Carolina Department of Transportation has scrapped its preferred plans for the extension of SC 31 after extensive public and stakeholder feedback.
According to NCDOT, there were seven different designs to extend SC 31 from SC 9 in Horry County across the state line to US 17 in Brunswick County, North Carolina. Of the seven, NCDOT’s preferred design was alternative four.
In October 2025, NCDOT and the South Carolina Department of Transportation held two joint public hearings regarding the Carolina Bays Parkway extension, which proposes a multi-lane highway using portions of the existing road and building on new locations.
