Mokena Residents Smell Gas – The Culprit Is Leaking Gasoline Tanks

A Special Meeting is scheduled at 11:00 this morning for Mokena city officials to discuss a dangerous threat that occurred last week.

Mokena Fire Chief Joe Cirelli was a guest on “Slocum in the Morning.” He told Scott Slocum that on the evening of June 21, the department received several calls from residents who reported smelling gasoline near 192nd and Wolf Road in Mokena.

Officials determined that the smell was coming from a former Citgo gas station, which had closed seven or eight years ago. When the gas station closed, the gasoline tanks were supposed to be drained. They were not; and they had begun to leak…
