Trucker was on his phone when he killed man changing tire on I-80, prosecutors say

An Illinois truck driver has been charged after prosecutors alleged he was using his cellphone when he struck and killed a 23-year-old motorist who was changing a flat tire along Interstate 80 before leaving the scene without stopping to help.

Kuljeet Kang, 34, is facing charges of reckless homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic crash following the June 24 incident on Interstate 80 near Torrence Avenue in suburban Cook County.

A judge has ordered Kang to remain in custody while the criminal case proceeds.
