NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — When Samuel Robinson challenged his eviction case without a lawyer, he leaned on what looked like solid legal precedents. But the illusion shattered when an appeals court realized his filing was full of AI-fabricated citations.

The Circuit Court for Davidson County found his appeal contained fabricated legal citations that showed “the hallmarks of artificial intelligence,” and affirmed a Nashville landlord’s eviction judgment against him.
Although the cases Robinson cited were real, his references often pointed to the wrong dates, included fabricated quotes, or invented citations. In one example, Robinson misquoted part of a Tennessee code outlining landlords’ maintenance responsibilities.
