Nashville Electric Service launches underground utilities pilot study

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — This week, Nashville Electric Service entered into a $3 million contract to conduct an underground utilities pilot study. The utility said they identified four locations where they will launch pilot projects as soon as July.

“That will help inform our systemwide undergrounding study,” Teresa Broyles-Aplin, NES’ CEO, said Wednesday.

About 2,000 miles away in Southern California, the threat isn’t ice, but wildfire. Southern California Edison covers a service area of about 50,000 square miles and has had underground power infrastructure for years.

“Of that service area, Southern California Edison operates 125,000 transmission and distribution lines,” Scott Johnson, an SCE spokesperson, told News 2. “Of those 125,000, approximately 32,000 are underground.”…
