Historic New Orleans red-light district building saved from demolition

One of the last buildings left from New Orleans’ famed red-light district, Storyville, is now up for sale. It will narrowly avoid demolition thanks to a vote earlier this month from a city commission.

1534 St. Louis Street was built in the late 1800’s. It began as a shoe store. Then, when the surrounding area became Storyville, it became Joe Victor’s Saloon.

Storyville was razed in the 1940’s. Today, only three of the neighborhood’s original buildings remain. 1534 St. Louis is the oldest of the three, and Kristin Gisleson Palmer, executive director of the Preservation Resource Center, said it has a unique history…
