New Orleans artist Andrew Lamar Hopkins channels folk art legend Clementine Hunter in new exhibit

Louisiana artists Andrew Lamar Hopkins and the late Clementine Hunter never met. Hopkins was just 10 years old when Hunter died in 1988. Yet right this minute, the two folk art masters are harmonizing like Simon and Garfunkel at a gallery on Julia Street.

The “Her Way, His Way” exhibit at Orleans Gallery combines a selection of Hunter’s bold, blunt, upbeat paintings of rural Louisiana life, which inspired a suite of finely made, fanciful artworks by Hopkins. Hunter’s bouquet of wildflowers inspired Hopkins’ bouquet of wildflowers, her pecan harvesting scene inspired his, etc.

The compatibility and contrast of the two artists’ visions makes the “Her Way, His Way” buzz. It’s certainly the summertime show not to miss…
